It all started with a promise.

PetSmart’s Founders made an early commitment in 1994 to refrain from selling cats and dogs at stores. Instead, they invited local animal shelters to bring adoptable pets into local stores to meet their new besties. And PetSmart Charities was launched.

30 years later, PetSmart Charities, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, continues its role as a leading funder of animal welfare in communities in the U.S. and Canada. 11 million pets have found loving homes through the in-store Adoptions program. With generous support from PetSmart customers' donations, individual gifts and corporate gifts, PetSmart Charities has made more than $600 million in grants.  This funding helps ensure pets and people thrive together with support for pet hunger, disaster response and access to affordable veterinary care.

With a four-star rating from Charity Navigator (the highest available), PetSmart Charities remains in the top 1% of all charities ranked. Visit the PetSmart Charities website for additional details.

In early 2023, PetSmart Charities made a groundbreaking commitment to invest $100 million over the next five years, aimed at removing the obstacles that prevent pets from receiving essential veterinary care. This initiative targets geographic, cultural, language and financial barriers that often stand in the way of pets getting the care they need to thrive. This significant investment reflects our dedication to not only improving individual pet health but also strengthening the bond between pets and their families across diverse communities.
